Therapy for adoptive and foster families, with you in every step

Dell Family Therapy is a solo practice in Rochester for children 4 to 17 and the adults raising them. You make the first call, you hear the plan, and you are part of every step, from the first week through month three and after.

Who we see

Who this practice is for, and who it is not

Better to know from the first call.

  • Adoptive, foster and kinship parents

Adults raising a child who joined the family through adoption, foster care or a relative’s care. One adult, a couple or the whole household can come.

  • Children 4 to 11

Sessions in a playroom, where the child plays and draws and Lissette follows. A parent or caregiver is part of most visits.

  • Teens 12 to 17

A teen’s own hour, with check-ins for the adults. Lissette explains ahead of time what stays private.

  • What this practice does not do

It is not a crisis service, an agency or a court evaluator. Lissette does not write custody, placement or visitation recommendations. For those, and for testing, we give you names of colleagues.

Services

Three kinds of sessions, one plan you can see

All three are offered in person in Rochester, or by video from anywhere in New York.

  • A child lining up small toy dinosaurs on a wooden table

    Child therapy

Play-based sessions for ages 4 to 11. A parent or caregiver joins for part of most visits.

    Teen therapy

A teen’s own hour for ages 12 to 17, with check-ins for the adults on a schedule everyone knows.

    Parent and family sessions

Sessions for the adults, and family sessions when the child is ready. For foster, adoptive and kinship caregivers.

The first three months

From the first call to month three, in the order it happens

You decide the pace. Nothing is added without you hearing why.

  1. Day 1

    Step 1: The first call

You call or write. Lissette returns your message, hears who is in the home and answers how the practice works. You do not have to tell the story yet.

  2. Week 1

    Step 2: Paperwork and consent

You send the consent documents for your child’s situation. We help you work out who has to sign: a parent, a guardian, the agency.

  3. Weeks 1 to 2

Step 3: A first visit with the adults

Lissette hears what you want to share, explains how she works and what stays private. The child comes in at the second visit.

  4. Month 1

    Step 4: A check-in with you

You and Lissette look at how the visits are going and what your child is willing to try, before anything is added.

  5. Month 3

    Step 5: A review together

You sit down with Lissette, and the caseworker if you wish and the guardian signs, to go over what changed at home and what comes next. You can continue, change the pace or stop.

Choose a time for the first call

The first call is with the adults, and it is a conversation, not an intake form. Choose a time in the practice’s own scheduler, or call and we will find one with you.

How fees work

The answers to what nearly everyone asks before a first session.

  • Insurance we work with

We bill most PPO plans. We do not take Medicaid or Medicare. If your child's coverage is Medicaid, we give you the names of colleagues who accept it, and we do not charge you for asking.

    • Most PPO plans

    • Out of network with other plans

    • No Medicaid or Medicare

  • If you pay yourself

If you pay without insurance, you receive the fee in writing before the first session. You pay by card at the end of each visit, including HSA and FSA cards. A limited number of reduced-fee visits are open: ask how to request one. We ask for 24 hours' notice to change an appointment.

  • Receipts for reimbursement

Each month we give you an itemized receipt (a superbill) with the dates and kind of session, to send to your plan, which may reimburse part of out-of-network care. It carries a diagnosis code your insurer can see. Your plan decides whether it pays anything; ask it before you start.

  • An estimate in advance

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written good faith estimate of what your care will cost before you start. We give you one before the first session. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

  • Checking your benefits

For plans we bill, we check your benefits before the first session and tell you what you will owe. For other plans, call yours and ask about out-of-network mental health benefits for a child or teen; we tell you what to ask.

Questions

What families ask first

Do you take my insurance?

We bill most PPO plans. We do not take Medicaid or Medicare, and we give you names of colleagues who do. Fees and plans are on the fees page.

What happens in the first session?

The first visit is with the adults. Lissette hears what you want to share, explains how she works and the limits of confidentiality, and the child joins at the second visit. Your first session page has the steps.

Can you see my teen, and how does consent work?

Yes, for ages 12 to 17. A parent or legal guardian consents in writing first; for a child in foster care, the person who can sign depends on the child's legal status. The consent page explains it.

What do I do in a crisis?

Call or text 988, any time. In an emergency, call 911. This practice is not monitored around the clock. If your child is in foster care, tell the caseworker as soon as it is safe.

What is private, and what are the limits?

Sessions are private. Lissette explains in writing what she keeps between her and the child and what she shares with the adults, including a risk of serious harm. Reports the law requires are made.
